My Painting Journey to France

Here you will journey right along with me to the often not thought of part of Provence, the Alpes-Maritime, as I journeyed there in May of 1999 for two weeks of absolutely wonderful painting time. You will visit a 30 kilometre stretch of one of the most beautiful parts of the world known as the Cote D'Azur, bounded by the Alpes springing up from the sea at the Italian border, between Nice and the last french village before the Italian border, Menton. Not only will you see the beautiful stretches of famous Mediterranean beach dotted with places like Monaco and the famous casino of Monte Carlo, but you will see wonderful medieval villages built of stone and perched on mountain tops. You will see the beautiful narrow footpaths and gardens of Eze perched high above the Mediterranean. You will see twisting roads and weathered paths. You will see pots of geraniums, traditional french doors, and the colorful umbrellas of Menten. You will see what I saw, through my eyes, the eyes of a working artist.

May 19, 1999

After 24 hours of travel I arrived in Nice at 11:00 PM their time. I've lost a day and a half travelling. I am staying at the bed and breakfast of Monique and Pierre Alliez and their daughter Vivienne. What wonderful folks. Their bautiful french home has been built with thick stucco walls, french doors, flower boxes in the windows filled with geraniums, and a lovely patio and garden. Monique was an oil painter but she is now studying watercolors with an excellent oriental painter, David Fujitsang. Can you believe it? I never even told them that I was a vegetarian and Monique has soy yogurt and soy milk in her fridge!! And there aren't many vegetarians in France.
